This refurbished home is located in a breathtaking setting: beside the Mediterranean Sea, fronting a beach and adjoining a coastal dune. The renovation, designed by Ruben Muedra Estudio de Arquitectura, was aimed at releasing it from the past and updating it for modern living. The goal was to integrate the house into its natural surroundings, fusing it together with the dune, the beach and the sea.

To do this, two key materials that embody the essence of the Mediterranean were used: light and white lime plaster. The simplicity, brightness and purity of the lines outside were likewise used in the interiors, where the predominance of white is offset against hints of walnut wood. The stone pavement harmonises the different spaces, from the porch to the courtyard of the pool, adding a warm and welcoming touch.

The kitchen, designed for both work and play, is one of the most outstanding rooms in the home. It has two cooking areas: one with an induction hob for everyday use and an industrial kitchen in stainless steel, to handle heavier workloads when inviting guests over for meals.

The Santos units are laid out around a large, multipurpose island that brings together the food preparation, cooking and washing-up areas, aside from multiple storage spaces. Its extended worktop is perfect for getting together and enjoying at any time of the day.

Perpendicular to the island, there’s a comfortable work surface comprised of three base units with full-extension drawers. Forming an L with these, four floor-to-ceiling tall units hold the oven, wine cooler, garde manger and storage units. The row of tall units continues after getting around a door, with six tall larder units that make up a spacious pantry. A glazed enclosure makes it possible to close off the kitchen when the users so wish, separating the spaces without reducing their brightness.

In this case, the house, designed by the architectural studio Jané & Font, is located on a hillside along the Costa Brava, near Aiguablava beach in Begur (Girona). It consists of two superimposed bodies, with the upper one slightly set back in comparison with the lower one. This difference in volumes is conducive to the continuous balcony on the upper floor, as well as the porticoed area on the ground floor, where the link between interiors and exteriors is at its greatest.

Inside, the rooms are laid out with simplicity and elegance, with a predominance of large picture windows that make it possible to enjoy the breathtaking views of the coast from any point inside the house. The furnishings and the décor feature contemporary elements, which have been chosen to underscore the Mediterranean essence of the building.

The public area is found on the ground floor, with a spacious, open area for the living room, dining room and kitchen. Its front and one of its sides is completely glazed, to let more light stream in and to connect it with the outdoors. There are no divisions or obstacles between rooms in order to facilitate movement and interaction among users.

The heart of the kitchen is a large central island, to which the dining room table is attached. The island serves as a food preparation and cooking area, and features large drawers to hold tableware, crockery, food and large utensils. Its worktop, with an overhang on the outer edge, transforms into a counter for snacks or quick meals.

The rest of the units are laid out parallel to the island, consisting of a combination of base, wall and tall units where the washing-up area and kitchen appliances are found. To minimise visual impact, the composition is framed by a partition wall. The Graphene finish of the cabinets designed by Santos helps to visually define the kitchen, giving it its own personality without clashing with the home’s overall décor.
