New-build home with open-plan kitchen, garden, vegetable garden and pool

The owners of this home – a recently retired couple – decided to embark on this new chapter of their lives by building a house tailored to their preferences and needs.

For its location, they chose a breathtaking setting along the coast of Galicia and they went for a project that would give them everything they wanted: Simplicity, convenience, open spaces and connection with the surroundings. The outcome is a two-storey building featuring contemporary and minimalist architecture, where the reinforced concrete structure supporting it has been left exposed, becoming a centrepiece in itself.

The structure gives rise to an abstract volume against which a play of solids and voids – as well as transparency and opacity – is presented, thereby blurring the traditional concept of windows. This has led to the façades changing throughout the day, altering the perception of the home both from the outside and from the inside.

The home has been designed to be the couple’s main residence, but also as a second home for their daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren to get some rest and relaxation on weekends and holidays.

The interior layout has been determined by adapting the spaces to the contours of the building envelope, freeing up the façades and bringing the stairs and wet areas to the centre.

The ground floor – characterised by its accessibility – serves as the ultimate hub for family life and is directly connected to the garden, vegetable garden and pool. Its rooms include a large lounge/diner, a bedroom, a dressing room, a study, a bathroom and a laundry area. Meanwhile, the first floor is distributed into another three bedrooms, a bathroom and a large lounge/diner with kitchen and terrace.

Great care has been taken with every last detail of the interior design of all the rooms, with an emphasis on functionality in keeping with the pared-down style of the home.

The kitchen layout – completely open out to the lounge/diner on the first floor – was designed in response to an express request by the owners for an organised, practical and functional room where everything needed for cooking and storage went in a single run.

A Cashmere ELEA model by Santos – with its design of clean lines and smooth fronts – was chosen to fit it out, as it seamlessly blends into the home’s interior design.

The central area of the kitchen holds the preparation, cooking and washing-up areas. This space includes – at the bottom – a unit with double drawers, another unit with shelves, an oven unit, a built-in dishwasher and a sink unit with waste bins in the lower drawer. At the top, it features five cabinets with side opening door – one of which integrates the kitchen hood.

The run has been rounded off with four tall units located at both ends which – aside from integrating the cold room – makes it possible to store supplies and cleaning implements in an orderly manner.
