Black Santos kitchens created by the designer Natalia Zubizarreta

For interior designer Natalia Zubizarreta, black kitchens are a timeless, elegant option which are wonderfully suitable for large, open rooms, although they can also work well with small spaces, particularly in combination with other colours and materials. What’s more, Santos’ anti-fingerprint finishes have contributed towards the growing popularity of these kitchens among users, as they are easy to clean with no annoying fingerprint marks in sight.
Black kitchen with island and eat-in area
The couple who own this home—a two-storey house with a garden and pool—decided to renovate it when their two children left home. Their idea was to adapt it to this new stage in their lives, completely redoing the interiors to create open-plan, contemporary and minimalist spaces.
With regard to the kitchen, one of their favourite rooms, they wanted it to be elegant, practical and with enough storage space, to have an eat-in area, and for it to open out to the living room. To kit it out, Natalia Zubizarreta chose a Santos design with plain handle-less fronts in combination with the Silk Black LAH—used in the base units—and Vertical Earth Walnut finishes—used for the wall and tall units.
The units follow an L-shaped layout, with a central island where the cooking area is found, and which includes two hob units with three full-extension, large-capacity drawers on the interior. The eat-in area—comprised of a table with a walnut finish by Ondarreta and chairs by Midi, and illuminated by a Long John lamp by Rubn—is on its exterior.
The shorter side of the L shape, which is perpendicular to the island, starts with three tall units housing the ovens, the fridge and the utility unit for cleaning products. Then there’s the washing-up area, comprised of a sink unit with recycling bins and three wall units with shelves. The bottom of these units comes with LED spotlights to illuminate the work area.
The second row of units runs parallel to the island, offering a large preparation area that benefits from plenty of natural light streaming in through the windows. This comes with an integrated dishwasher and a lot of storage space: three storage units and two large drawer units.
The black and wood combination helps to create an elegant, sophisticated and welcoming atmosphere. In contrast, the white colour of the Neolith Mont Blanc worktops brings brightness and lightness to the whole, visually connecting it to the living room adjacent to it.

Black kitchen, dining room and living room all in one single space
The owners of this loft, a young couple with two young children, bought the home with a comprehensive remodelling project in mind. Its original structure felt old-fashioned and extremely compartmentalised to them, and they longed for a home that was open and bright, with a contemporary and minimalist style.
The renovation planned by Natalia Zubizarreta completely transformed its layout, reorganising the spaces to group them together according to their function. Thus, after completion of the works, the kitchen, dining room and living room all share a single large, open area.
To kit out the kitchen, Santos cabinets that give the room a very distinct personality—thanks to their clean lines and black fronts—were chosen. The cooking and washing-up areas were laid out in parallel, featuring spacious work surfaces also in black. The former includes two hob units with drawers and deep drawers, plus three wall units—one of them housing the canopy hood. The latter comes with a sink unit with waste bins, drawer unit, dishwasher and undercounter freezer. The black spotlights by Wever & Ducré, built into a ceiling cavity, provide this area with additional light.
The kitchen furnishings are rounded out with a set of tall units, which is perpendicular to the washing-up area and holds different kitchen appliances and storage units within a very limited amount of space: boiler, oven, microwave oven, fridge, pantry, utility unit for cleaning products and washing machine and dryer unit.
Careful planning has given rise to a comfortable, practical kitchen with plenty of storage space without being overwhelming.
