Renovating while staying true to the original essence

Open-plan kitchen with island, glass-door unit and diner

This flat is found in a stately building dating back to the early 20th century, with an eclectic style influenced by 17th century and 18th century French architecture. Its new owners – a couple with a daughter – wanted to refurbish the flat to adapt it to their tastes and preferences while staying true to the original essence of the building. Thus, iconic elements such as the high ceilings crowned by profusely decorated cornices, large windows and wooden joinery were preserved and given a refresh. The predominance of white makes the spaces look even brighter, enhancing their magnificence. Meanwhile, warm touches bring the necessary balance to create cosy and delightful atmospheres.

Two doors provide access from the entrance hall to the daytime living area, an open-plan space shared by the kitchen, the diner and an adjoining living room. The classic and timeless design of the kitchen unit favours their integration into the home’s interior design. The room, laid out in a parallel arrangement, features a long row of tall, base, and glass-door units facing a large island.

Space for display and storage

Parallel to the island, there’s a row of furniture with a large central space for display and storage. The area includes, in the lower part, two units with drawers and pull-outs for storing cutlery, crockery, and frequently used utensils. Above these base units, there is a spectacular composition of glass-door units with black aluminium frame, smoked glass fronts and shelves, and wooden interiors.

Glass-door units with interior lighting on the side panels

Interior lighting on the side panels for glass-door units helps to enhance their finish as well as the items displayed in them. It’s a discreet black aluminium profile that is embedded in both side panels of the unit, projecting indirect light consistently and evenly towards the back. Thanks to the glass shelves, the light spreads all throughout their interiors, emphasising the see-through nature of the whole. In addition, the design of this profile with a diffuser keeps the light from shining directly into the eyes of users, avoiding any annoying glare.

Customised interiors

The interiors of the tall units, customised with the same wood finish as the glass-door units, give the space a more harmonious appearance when the units are open.

Continuity between spaces

The unit for storing tableware, built on a black lacquered metal frame, stands out for its natural wood veneer fronts outlined with solid wood edging. This unit shares structural and stylistic features with the sideboard which is found on the other side of the partition wall. The link between both elements belonging to the Living line by Santos ties the entrance hall and the diner together, reinforcing the sense of continuity between spaces.
