Black kitchen with island in a modern home integrated into a rural environment

The owners of this house, a couple with two children, wanted something simple – not excessive or ostentatious – that would let them switch off and enjoy nature in their free time and while on holiday leave. This is why they chose to build a retreat on the same rural plot as the main home, located in the heart of a village, surrounded by hórreos and traditional buildings.

The home is a single-storey pavilion, with a flat green roof and Japanese cedar timber cladding. The timber, charred according to the traditional Japanese technique called shou sugi ban, was combined with large glass panes that – aside from making the interiors look even brighter, further enhance their connection with their immediate surroundings.

The symmetrical floor plan is laid out around two closed structures clad in oak timber, separate from the building envelope and intended to hold the service areas: toilet, bathroom, laundry, pantry and cold room. The rest of the space has been divided into three large blocks, with a bedroom at each end and the daytime living area with kitchen, diner and lounger in the middle.

The home is accessed through a small annexe that – despite not occupying the central area – is connected to it through a charred timber lattice panel. The microcement flooring that runs all throughout creates flow across the different spaces, contributing to a more harmonious and homogeneous look.

The kitchen, diner and lounge share the large open-plan space for the daytime living area, which is essentially the heart of the home. To fit out the kitchen, they chose a FINE design by Santos finished in Silk Black, in keeping with the colour scheme and minimalist look of the interior design.

The kitchen cabinets are laid out around a large centre island that holds the preparation, cooking and eat-in areas. Fume extraction is through a ceiling hood that – as it’s completely concealed – creates a space that looks much more open.

The island comes with multiple storage options on its two sides: two hob units with drawers and full-extension, large-capacity double drawers on the inside, plus four storage units with shelves on the outside. The work surface, which extends along one side of the island, comes with stools to serve as a dining table. A lamp illuminates this corner, giving it its own personality.

The rest of the kitchen cabinets comprises a row that runs parallel to the island, framed by one of the structures clad in oak timber. This holds a larder and the cold room, accessible through a door integrated into one of its sides.

The composition holds the washing-up area, with a unit featuring interior double drawers, a unit with shelves and a sink unit with recycling bins in the bottom double drawer. The kitchen furnishings were rounded off with two wall units with flap doors, plus a tall unit with a built-in multifunction oven, microwave oven and additional storage options.
