White, grey and wood Santos kitchen with island in a luxury home

Casa Aramara is a family home located on the edge of the bay to the north of the Peninsula Papagayo luxury resort (Guanacaste, Costa Rica), designed to blend right into its stunning natural surroundings.
One of the main challenges this project faced was the uneven terrain. This was overcome using a layout based on separate and interconnected modules that worked with the natural contours of the terrain. The home was designed to feature clean, simple lines where the stripped-down aesthetic of the materials, as well as the presence of huge, open and uncluttered glass surfaces stood out. These were intended to enhance the brightness of the rooms, blurring the boundaries between the home’s indoor and outdoor spaces.
The home’s centre module comes with two guest suites and a laundry area on the lower level, while the upper level is where the entrance, the social area with kitchen, dining room and living room, as well as the outdoor leisure space with terrace, barbecue and pool are found. The latter area serves as a link to the second module, which is also divided into two levels with three suites and a study.
Social area with dining room, living room and kitchen
The kitchen with island, dining room and living room comprise the heart of the home, a social area that takes up nearly the entire floor of the main module’s upper level, meant for enjoying memorable moments with family and guests. The area was designed to be a bright, open, airy and free-flowing space, with three glazed walls offering views of the breathtaking landscape from anywhere.
The different rooms were harmonised through two main resources: the flooring, which runs throughout the entire floor, and the slatted timber ceiling in natural pine wood against a black background. Both elements continue to the outside, giving rise to a sense of continuity between the social area and the leisure areas around it.

The owners wanted a kitchen along the lines of the rest of the house: pared-down, open and integrated into its environment. They decided on a FINE model by Santos, characterised by its clean lines and plain fronts. The minimalist design of the units, together with the combination of the Anthracite Grey, Innsbruck White and Horizontal Earth Walnut finishes, made it possible to perfectly meld the kitchen with the materials and elements comprising the social area’s interior design.
Right in the middle of the room is a spectacular island that holds the preparation and cooking areas. On its inside face, the island comes with an ice machine, two large drawer units and a hob unit – all of them with full-extension, large-capacity double drawers. The work surface extends along the sides and towards the island’s outer side, where it creates a comfortable counter on which to enjoy snacks and quick meals.
The rest of the furniture in the kitchen is laid out in a U around the island. Parallel to it, there’s a magnificent run that’s more than five metres long, which holds the washing-up area with three drawer units, two integrated dishwashers, a sink unit with recycling bins and nine wall units with side opening door. There’s a LED lighting profile beneath these units which, aside from providing light for the work area, has plug sockets that make it easier to connect and use small appliances.
Flanking the island are two compositions of tall units which hold different appliances and storage solutions in a compact organised area. On one side, there are two tall larder units and three tall units integrating two ovens, a microwave oven and a warming drawer. Two additional tall larder units stand on the other side, with drawer units at the bottom, plus the cold storage area with a fridge and freezer.
Private spaces
Casa Aramara boasts five bright and spacious bedrooms with their own terraces: a master suite with a made-to-measure walk-in wardrobe in beech and four guest suites fitted out with wardrobes in lacquered white MDF. A similar interior design was used in all of them, such as bamboo flooring, interior ceilings in gypsum board painted white, exterior teak ceilings and doors in waterproof MDF finished in white.
