Santos kitchens finished in Cashmere designed by the designer Natalia Zubizarreta

Natalia Zubizarreta is of the mind that Santos kitchens finished in Cashmere bring a warm touch that works particularly well when the room opens out to the rest of the house, aside from looking discreet and elegant. In this article, the designer gives us some tips to design this type of kitchens, and illustrates them with a series of extremely inspiring projects done by her studio.

Kitchens finished in Cashmere: a trend on the rise

Cashmere Santos kitchens by the designer Natalia Zubizarreta

More and more users want homes that embrace them, enfold them and provide them with a haven of safety. This is related to a growing demand for open-plan kitchens designed for working as well as sharing moments with family and friends. Blending together ceilings, walls, joinery and furniture in the same colour contributes towards reinforcing the feel of a single space, and the best way to achieve this is going for natural, soothing colours such as Cashmere.

Cashmere is now a firm favourite when it comes to colours for kitchens, giving white a run for its money as the users’ most preferred colour. For the designer Natalia Zubizarreta, this is largely due to the fact that it’s a colour that’s welcoming, easy to mix and match, and able to give a unique feel. She associates it with the soothing quality of a protective embrace or the soft warmth of a wool jumper.

This is why kitchen cabinets designed by Santos – with their clean lines and smooth fronts in Cashmere – are a good starting point when creating open spaces that convey serenity and expansiveness. Furthermore, thanks to its ability to blend in with its surroundings, Cashmere suits any style or finish – marble, wood, stone, gold, black, brass, steel, etc. – paving the way for endless possibilities to design unique, bespoke and completely customised kitchens.

For example, if you wish to create a unique room with a distinctive personality, you could use wallpaper to set off kitchen furniture finished in Cashmere. Combining Cashmere with exposed concrete surfaces will contribute towards creating warm and contemporary spaces, while combining it with wood finishes will help to make atmospheres feel cosy and homey.

Natalia firmly believes that the Cashmere finish is here to stay, thanks to its aesthetics and its ability to create pleasant and extremely liveable spaces.

Santos Kitchens decorated by stylist Sol van Dorssen

In this article, the stylist Sol van Dorssen shares some tips to create cosy rooms brimming with personality, which she puts into practice in Santos kitchens decorated by her.

Sol van Dorssen: dressing spaces to make them unique

Stylist Sol Van Dorssen
Photography: Stella Rotger Marti

Sol van Dorssen studied Interior Design in Buenos Aires (Argentina), and soon embarked on a prolific career as a design and interior stylist in publishing and advertising. She currently heads Vestir tu casa, an in-person and online decoration service that – through a keen understanding of users’ tastes and styles – creates spaces tailored to them. She also collaborates with architecture and interior design studios, finishing off their projects with styling or preparing the settings for photo shoots.

Sol loves ‘beautiful and inspiring things’ and firmly believes in the idea of the home as a haven where one should feel most at home. She’s passionate about working in private homes to ‘dress them up’ with finishing touches and turn them into warm, cheerful and magazine-worthy homes.

Her kitchen styling projects hinge on three goals: breathing life into them, showcasing them authentically, and giving them a warm and cosy touch, particularly when the design makes them look cold. Her projects start with an analysis of the colours of the cabinets, flooring and wall coverings in the kitchen so she can propose colour palettes and materials to be used in the different areas based on it. Thus, she judiciously uses fabrics and wood to convey warmth, and goes for the placement of aromatic plants near windows or sink areas to give the room a lively, refreshing and natural touch.

One of her absolute musts in styling is choosing decorative items carefully. She goes for elements that are aesthetically pleasing while seamlessly blending into the overall style of the kitchen and home. For kitchens with an island, for example, she uses still lifes made up of large elements related to day-to-day life. She’s fond of using wooden trays as – aside from offering a wide variety of sizes and formats – they help keep things looking orderly and can frame smaller details.

If the kitchen has open shelves, she tends to use baskets to conceal items that are best kept out of sight, playing with repetition. Now, if the kitchen opens out to the dining room, she adds elements from outside the kitchen to visually connect it with the rest of the home, such as rugs, upholstered chairs or stools, pictures on the shelves or walls, table lamps in the worktop area, linen curtains on the windows, etc.

Timeless Santos in renovated homes

26 / 01 / 2024

In this article, we cover three renovated home projects boasting kitchens kitted out with Santos furniture, featured by publications specialising in architecture, décor and interior design.

Façade of old home
Refurbished old home

This old home consists of a main block and an annex, which were completely refurbished. In the former, the original stone walls were recovered and the home’s layout redesigned, knocking down walls to improve the spatial and visual connection between the rooms.

In contrast, in the annex, conservation and maintenance work was done, and the façade was covered with Iroko wood cladding finished in white lasur fitted vertically. The same thing was done to the rear façade facing the garden, and on it, the primary bedroom boasts a glass gallery.

The house has a ground floor, first floor and loft, connected by a staircase. The ground floor now holds the daytime living area, which is shared by the kitchen, dining room and living room. The dining room sits at the centre of this space – right in front of the kitchen – and then the living room, which is connected to the garden through large folding glass doors.

The kitchen is on one side of the daytime living area, partially separated from the rest of the rooms by an open exposed stone partition wall. To kit it out, a Cashmere FINE design by Santos and a counter finished in Natural Oak wood laminate by the brand were chosen.

The furniture is laid out along a single wall, with the preparation, washing-up and cooking areas in the middle. It comes with an integrated dishwasher, two hob units with plate rack accessory, and a sink unit with recycling bins in the double drawer at the bottom.

Above these units are three wall units with folding doors, which come with custom interiors finished in Natural Oak wood. The one above the hob houses the built-in canopy cooker hood, while the other two have interior shelves. Beneath these two wall units, there’s an LED lighting profile with plug sockets, which provides indirect lighting over the worktop and makes it easy to use small appliances. This profile also comes with a slit to fit the intermediate area of the kitchen with practical accessories.

The kitchen furnishings are rounded off with a number of tall units located at both ends. On one end, the tall utility unit provides space to store cleaning utensils and products, while the larder units with interior drawers are perfect for putting the shop away in an organised manner. On the other end, three tall units hold the built-in oven, microwave oven, fridge and freezer.

Private areas

The first floor of the home is for private areas, featuring a primary suite with a dressing room, two bedrooms, a family bathroom and a laundry. Also on this floor, the building annexed to the house’s main block features an open study connected to the terrace that looks out over the garden – a cosy space that serves as a retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life while gazing at the horizon.

Façade of detached house

The new owners of this detached house with garden and pool – a couple with two grown-up daughters – decided to carry out a comprehensive renovation to tailor it to their new needs and lifestyle. It’s a four-storey corner building that originally had an excessively compartmentalised interior layout. The project mainly focused on the ground and first floors, doing away with unnecessary partition walls to create more spacious, comfortable and cosy atmospheres.

After the renovation, the ground floor holds the public areas, with the entrance hall, kitchen, dining room, living room and toilet sharing the same open-plan space. The first floor, in contrast, is where the private areas are found, with two large bedrooms, a bathroom and a laundry. For a greater sense of continuity, wood effect vinyl flooring was used on both levels, as well as the staircase connecting them. The interior design features fine materials and a colour scheme with light colours, aimed at enhancing natural light and making the spaces feel larger.

Outdoor furnished lounge area
Metal rattan outdoor table

On the outside of the home, the exposed brick façade was painted in a light, neutral colour to make it look even brighter. Furthermore, the front door, all the windows and cladding on the staircase were replaced. On the porch, new floor and wall tiling was installed, a ceiling with indirect lighting was designed, and the planters surrounding the entrance were removed, freeing up space to create a comfortable lounge area furnished with metal rattan furniture. The roof uses a combination of black ceramic roof tiles with brown flecks and wooden slats with recessed LED lighting, and has solar panels installed.

White kitchen with island and glazed enclosure

Living room, dining room and kitchen, in renovated detached house

The owners wanted a kitchen designed for everyday use, as they ate all their meals at home. The room was completely integrated into the daytime living area, demarcated by a fixed glass panel with sliding door and white metal profile. This lets users separate the kitchen when they wish, without losing brightness or the visual connection. Its walls were clad with wallpaper, and to kit it out, the Pearl White FINE model by Santos – a design with pure lines that seamlessly blends into the home’s interior design – was chosen.

The kitchen cabinets were laid out in an L, with one leg holding the washing-up zone, fitted with two storage units, integrated dishwasher and sink unit with double drawer, interior drawer and recycling bins.

The second leg of the L starts with the cooking zone, comprised of a hob unit, a wall unit with adjustable shelves and another wall unit that houses the canopy hood. This is followed by a composition of three tall units.

The first is a pocket door cabinet whose fronts can be temporarily hidden away along its sides to make it easy to access and see the entire space. Its interiors – customised in a Walnut wood finish – include shelves with rear LED lighting, drawers and an auxiliary work area with worktop, lighting profile and plug sockets. Thanks to its features, this cupboard is perfect as a breakfast area or to use small appliances without having to move them from one place to another.

The second tall unit holds an oven and a microwave oven, aside from additional storage options, and the third tall unit rounds off the row with a fridge and freezer.

The kitchen furnishings are completed by a centre island in which the worktop – which extends along the sides and towards the unit’s inner face – serves as a counter for snacks or quick meals. On its outer face, the island features two big large-capacity drawer units.

Entrance hall, living room, toilet and dining room

The entrance hall is directly connected to the living room, yet separated from it by means of a composition of wooden slats finished in oak. This space also has a guest toilet, which is accessed through a floor-to-ceiling door that – as it’s panelled in the same oak finished wood panelling as the wall where it’s found – looks completely inconspicuous.

Dining room with grooved-door sideboard
Dining room with round white table

The dining room is found at the heart of the daytime living area, between the living room and kitchen. Its furniture includes a grooved-door sideboard and a round table, which makes it easy to move around it while creating a break in the pattern of straight lines defining the space.

Bedrooms

Bedroom with a bed and upholstered bed frame
Bedroom with large dressing room

The home’s primary bedroom was created by fusing together two of the original bedrooms. It has a bed with an upholstered bed frame, bespoke upholstered headboard, wall-mounted wood bedside tables and a footstool. The wall of the headboard features mouldings while all the other walls are covered in wallpaper. Lighting is through a lighting trunking that houses dimmable LED spotlights. This bedroom also has a large dressing room, demarcated by a large glass panel with two central sliding doors and metal profiles lacquered in champagne. The wardrobes are made to measure in oak veneered board, with handles in the same finish as the profiles of the enclosure.

Guest bedroom in renovated detached house
Bedroom with study and shelf

The second bedroom in the house, designed as a guest room and study, is kitted out with a unit that comes with a folding bed, a wall cabinet and open shelf, plus a desk with drawer unit. All furniture is made to measure in oak veneered board – combining smooth and slatted surfaces – just like in the other areas of the house.

Bathroom and laundry

The same solution for the ground-floor toilet was used for the access to the main bathroom – which helps to reinforce the sense of continuity between both floors. In contrast, the laundry comes with a bespoke cabinet, designed to store cleaning utensils and integrate the washer and dryer. It also comes with a pull-out ironing board and bins to hold dirty laundry until it’s about to be washed.

Rooms front part of renovated flat

This home was created by joining two previously separate flats. The decision to join them together largely conditioned the renovation and interior design project, as the goal was to create large and pleasant atmospheres, without hallways that would give rise to maze-like spaces.

In keeping with this premise, the rooms were designed and laid out according to their purpose. Thus, the daytime living area was set out in front of the house, facing the main street and fitted with large windows that would let plenty of natural light stream in. The private areas – five suites, a toilet, a laundry, a larder, a family room and a study – were grouped towards the rear of the home. This was to afford the spaces for resting or studying with more privacy and quiet, keeping them away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Family room in renovated flat

Timeless living room and dining room

The key to achieving an uncluttered layout lies in the floor’s hub, made up of the family room and study. This hub, which serves as a nexus between the public and private areas, helps to create a sense of spaciousness, while leading out to the rest of the rooms without employing long hallways.

The open-plan design of the flat was enhanced by carefully curated minimalist décor, where every item serves a purpose without overwhelming the atmosphere. The interior design strikes just the right balance between classic and contemporary, with a predominance of materials such as wood and large-format porcelain tiles that – together with the mouldings in the ceilings and walls – confer the home with a timeless style.

Open-plan kitchen with island, eat-in area and glazed enclosure

The kitchen, dining room and living room flow together into a single space whose high ceilings, together with the mouldings, make it look majestic. The flooring, which runs along the length of the whole floor, contributes towards reinforcing the sense of harmony and continuity among the different atmospheres. The kitchen is found on one end of the daytime living area, which is separated by a glazed enclosure that lets users open and close it off whenever they wish.

The kitchen furniture, a FINE design by Santos, is laid out around a centre island that holds the preparation and cooking areas. The island also features two large drawer units and a hob unit. Its outer face was used to create a worktop-mounted bar finished in Olive Ash wood which – together with some stools – serves as an eat-in area to enjoy any meal without needing to go to the dining room.

Santos kitchen with furniture parallel to island

The rest of the kitchen furniture is parallel to the island, creating a run with fronts finished in natural Olive Ash veneered wood. The ends of the composition have four tall units that – within a compact and organised space – integrate an oven, microwave oven, fridge and freezer, as well as spaces to store utensils and provisions.

The washing-up area is found in the middle, and it features a built-in dishwasher and sink unit with recycling bins in the double drawer at the bottom. The area is rounded off with three side-opening glass door units with black aluminium frame, smoked glass fronts and customised interiors finished in Olive Ash wood. These glass doors units include two exclusive lighting profiles by Santos: one integrated into the bottom, which provides indirect lighting on the work surface, and another on the shelf, which projects decorative indirect lighting onto the back of the unit.

The dining room, located between the kitchen and living room, is furnished with a round table and a hanging lamp. The living room, found at the opposite end to the kitchen, is laid out in an L with two sofas. The block made up of one of these sofas and the sideboard – located right behind it – helps to create a natural transition between the dining room and lounge area, without obstructing the view. This space is completed with a coffee table, a wall-mounted unit and a rug. Complementary lighting is provided by a floor lamp.

The first space, designed to enjoy film viewing sessions with the family, is kitted out with a comfortable chaise longue sofas, coffee tables and a bean bag. In contrast, the large study, has a long desk made to measure in a Tuscan Oak wood finish.

The event, called ‘Carácter Atlántico’, was held in Galicia. It took place over two days for two groups in order to encourage closer contact among the guests of each group. The educational, cultural and recreational activities of the event – with the designer Natalia Zubizarreta as the emcee – centred on the key aspects comprising the philosophy and personality of the Santos brand, embodied by the sea, stone and wood.

The experience started out with a welcome session at the iconic Cidade da Cultura in Santiago de Compostela. Amidst this spectacular setting, the guests enjoyed a private viewing that let them explore the sea beds of the coast of Galicia.

In the afternoon, the professionals went on a tour of the Santos production facilities. While on it, they got a first-hand look of the many processes that give rise to the brand’s products, from the receipt and processing of raw materials to assembly, including extensive quality controls. In addition, Natalia Zubizarreta gave a presentation focused on what she considered to be Santos’ differentiated value proposition, using some of the most representative interior design projects by her studio as examples.

After visiting the factory, the guests travelled to Pepe Vieira Restaurant & Hotel Relais & Châteaux, which is very near the Ría de Pontevedra, on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. Here, they enjoyed a menu specially created for the dinner by two Michelin-starred chef Pepe Vieira. The chef himself showed them the R&D kitchen of the complex, a creative workspace kitted out with furniture designed by the Santos brand where the restaurant’s team get together to propose and develop new dishes. The first day concluded with accommodation in the bungalows dotting the grounds of the complex amidst the natural environment.

The second day of the event consisted of a guided walking tour through the cobblestone streets and iconic landmarks of Santiago de Compostela, declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985. Lunch at an iconic restaurant in the city’s historic district served as the conclusion to the event, leaving a great impression on the guests.

Santos Kitchens in refurbished homes

27 / 10 / 2023

Here are two refurbished home projects kitted out with Santos furniture, featured by publications specialising in architecture, décor and interior design.

Open-plan kitchen with island and eat-in area in a renovated flat

Publication: Casa Viva
Santos dealer: Santos Vaguada
Construction: Reformar Renovación

Decoration and styling: Natalia Zubizarreta Interiorismo

Living room in renovated flat

The owner of this flat – a recently separated young dad with two kids – needed to renovate it to make it fit for purpose for the new stage of life he just entered. The home is on the second floor of a building located in a housing estate with gardens, swimming pool, play area and sports pitches.

Living room with light-coloured tables and sofas
Redesign of internal layout of renovated flat

He thought the tranquil and family-friendly environment would be perfect for his kids, but the flat was in a very poor state as it was more than 40 years old. The renovation involved a complete redesign of the internal layout, removing unnecessary partition walls and hallways to create larger and brighter spaces. In terms of the interior design, the owner was keen on a minimalist and functional style that would facilitate everyday living – hence the simple and pared-down furnishings.

Daytime living area in renovated flat

The entrance to the flat directly leads to the daytime living area, with the kitchen on one side and the living room on the other. The two spaces are separated by a tilt-and-slide door, which lets users connect them or close them off without sacrificing brightness. In the living room – which is connected to the outdoor terrace – the partition wall where the television is stands out, with rendering that adds texture and visual impact to the atmosphere. Everything in this space has been intended to enable dad and kids to comfortably enjoy movie marathons at home, or get-togethers with family and friends.

The kitchen was kitted out with Santos furniture featuring the Cashmere ELEA design and laid out around a centre island, which has two units with interior shelves and complemented by stools. This unit – aside from providing a large work surface – also serves as a table to enjoy informal meals.

L-shaped white Santos kitchen in renovated flat

The rest of the furniture in the kitchen was laid out in an L along two partition walls. One of the sections holds the preparation and washing-up areas, with an integrated dishwasher, drawer unit and sink unit with recycling bins.

Above this run, there are four wall units with adjustable interior shelves, flanked by shelves finished in Natural Oak wood. Underneath this composition, there’s an LED lighting profile with plug sockets, which provides indirect lighting over the worktop and makes it easy to use small appliances. The profile also comes with a slit to fit the intermediate area of the kitchen with practical accessories such as multipurpose racks, jar holders or roll holders. In this area, the furniture is rounded out with a fridge unit that looks quite unobtrusive as it’s integrated between a column and the wall.

The other section of the L is where the cooking area is found, and it’s kitted out with a hob unit and two wall units that hold the kitchen hood. The wall units also feature shelves and an LED lighting profile. This run is completed by a tall unit that integrates an oven, a microwave oven and additional storage space.

The available space in front of the kitchen island was used to create an eat-in area, designed to be the house’s main dining room as well as a work area. This room also features a laundry area located perpendicular to the table. It’s a composition of units which holds a tall washer and dryer unit, a tall utility unit and a storage unit to keep dirty laundry in until it’s ready for washing.

Private areas

An interior design based on the right balance of light and warm colours was used in the three bedrooms, creating a wonderful feeling of serenity and sanctuary. In the suite, a wall rendered in clay beautifully sets off the headboard and oak bedside tables. The children’s bedrooms were decorated with lacquered wood feature wall cladding, which – aside from keeping the most vulnerable areas of the wall protected – adds a very attractive touch.

In contrast, porcelain tiles were used on the walls and floors of the bathrooms, with the children’s bathroom finished in faux linen fabric. The latter’s walls were painted green to make them look livelier and more cheerful.

Comprehensive renovation of refurbished flat

The original layout of this flat – found on the third floor of a centrally located building – was extremely compartmentalised, resulting in many dark and narrow rooms. Its new owners, a couple with two daughters, decided to undertake a complete renovation before moving into it to turn it into a home with bright, open, comfy and cosy spaces.

The interior design played a crucial role in delivering the desired outcome, with a classic and timeless style that – using white as the perfect backdrop – emphasises the beige, grey, black and wood tones of the flooring, furniture and decorative elements.

Green Santos kitchen

The kitchen – one of the main hubs for family life and interaction – has a very distinctive look, with green cabinets that make it stand out and give it a lot of personality. The kitchen also stands out for its meticulous planning, which not only made the most out of a long and narrow floor plan but also made tasks easier and favoured interaction among family members. An eat-in area was also added to the room.

To kit out the kitchen, a MARCO model by Santos finished in Sage Green Silk Matt – a timeless design that blends classic and contemporary – was chosen. The cabinets were laid out in parallel, with an aisle that runs down the centre for the users to comfortably move about.

The first run holds the preparation, cooking and washing-up areas, with two hob units with full-extension, large-capacity double drawers, an integrated dishwasher and a sink unit with recycling bins in the double drawer at the bottom. Meanwhile, the upper area comes with five wall units with side opening door – four of them with interior shelves and an LED lighting profile at the bottom, and a fifth that houses the canopy hood.

The second run of kitchen furniture features a base unit and a tall storage unit with shelves and interior double drawers, a top box unit to make the most of the available space above the fridge, and a tall oven unit that holds a multifunction oven and a microwave oven. The centre features a breakfast nook, made up of a large drawer unit and a worktop-mounted rolling shutter unit. The latter comes with plugs and its own lighting, making it possible to store and use small appliances without having to move them around.

The renovation also created a room adjoining the kitchen as a laundry area. In this case, an Innsbruck White ELEA design by Santos was chosen to kit it out and the units were laid out in an L.

At the back of the room, the shorter leg has a sink unit with worktop. Above it is a wall unit with flap door, with a bar for hangers at the bottom.

The longer leg holds a composition that includes a tall utility unit in the corner, a larder unit and a space to integrate a washer and a dryer. Above the latter, there’s a top box unit, which provides additional storage space.

Pepe Vieira Hotel Relais & Chateâux is a concept that emerged spontaneously and was developed gradually over the course of 13 years.

Pepe Vieira Restaurant & Hotel: a unique concept in an unparalleled setting

Setting of Pepe Vieira Restaurant & Hotel

The idea for this project came about when a wedding was held on the plot, where a campsite with a restaurant sat. An informal conversation opened the possibility of transforming that space into what it is now: a unique hotel complex in an unparalleled setting – both for its untamed nature and its lofty location featuring terraces overlooking the Ría de Pontevedra.

Landscape of Pepe Vieira Hotel & Restaurant

The complex sits on a plot measuring 12.500 square metres and is laid out around a main building with three stories surrounded by stone walls that form a series of terraces.

The hotel design plan by 2es+ was prepared under the premise of bringing the living connection between nature and construction to the building’s architecture. The main source of inspiration for it was the work of chef Pepe Vieira – with two Michelin stars – himself. Through his dishes, he tells authentic, traditional and simple stories while bringing a creative perspective.

Work was done on the main building, together with the entrances, parking area and landscaping. What’s more, 14 one-storey houses or cabins with double rooms, a pool area and an organic vegetable garden based on the traditional productive system – with different plants sharing the same space – were added to the existing facilities.

The basement and first floor of the main building hold spaces designed to provide auxiliary services such as wine cellars, stockrooms, offices, dressing rooms, toilets, mechanical rooms and freight lifts.

In contrast, the ground floor is where most of the activity on the complex takes place, and the rooms have been laid out depending on their function. Thus, one of the wings holds the public areas, which include the lobby, social lounge with fireplace, main lounge, dining room, cloakroom and toilets. These areas are complemented on the outside with a porch-terrace and a pond.

The work areas of Pepe Vieira Restaurant & Hotel include the R&D kitchen, a creative space where the kitchen crew can get together to have a think and develop new culinary creations. What’s more, it gives the chef the chance to welcome and interact with colleagues, friends and customers in a more informal and intimate setting that’s in direct contact with the nature all around it.

To kit out this space, the architects of 2es+ chose a FINE design by Santos finished in Silk Black, a colour that suits the design’s overall concept as it brings the simplicity and consistency sought.

The kitchen furniture was laid out in parallel, with an island and a work table located in the middle of the room. The island holds the preparation and cooking areas, and it comes with a hob unit, a drawer unit with full-extension, large-capacity double drawers, plus a storage unit. Meanwhile, the outer face features three storage units with interior shelves

Behind the island, there’s a row of furniture with the sink area right in the middle. The lower part has been kitted out with two large drawer units and a sink unit that comes with recycling bins in the bottom double drawer.

Above these are three wall units with flap doors, which come with an exclusive LED lighting profile by Santos underneath. Aside from providing indirect lighting onto the worktop, it has plug sockets that make it easy to use small appliances. The profile also comes with a slit to fit the intermediate area of the kitchen with practical accessories such as a jar holder, a bar with hooks, a roll holder or a book and tablet holder.

The sink area is flanked by two tall units: one integrates the fridge while the other is a tall larder unit with interior drawers, which makes organising and finding contents a snap. The row is rounded off by five top box units, designed to store rarely used items that would otherwise take up valuable space in the kitchen.

Along the partition wall facing the island, there’s a second row of furniture with a structure similar to the other one. In this case, the ends of the composition have two tall larder units, while the middle has three drawer units with worktop and three wall units with LED lighting profile. This composition is also rounded off by five top box units, which provide additional storage space.

All in all, the furniture and its carefully planned layout contribute towards creating a comfortable and practical atmosphere brimming with personality, where nature and abstraction come together harmoniously.

Accommodations immersed in nature

All aspects of this project have been designed in such a way to delight visitors so they can enjoy an all-round experience through the five senses. The one-storey houses, strategically spread across the estate and its terraces, play a crucial role in this regard.

These 14 prism-shaped prefabricated structures finished in white are one with nature and open on one side to reveal breathtaking views. The structures have been laid out facing slightly different directions, with the aim of creating intermediate spaces and preserving their independence and privacy.

Hotel accommodations that blend with nature

A black metal box serves as the entrance to the cabin, while housing its facilities. The roofs – visible from the terraces – are extensively landscaped and environmentally friendly, seamlessly blending into the nature of the environment. A small glazed courtyard helps to bring nature inside while helping to distribute the different spaces without losing the connection with the environment.

The decision to use prefabricated structures was made deliberately, as it was hands down the most environmentally friendly option by keeping earthworks and the waste generated to a minimum.

Accommodations with black interiors at Pepe Vieira hotel
Accommodation connected to the outside and nature
Black toilets at accommodations of Pepe Vieira hotel

The black interiors of the one-storey houses create the ideal environment to bring the nature all around them to the fore. This encourages guests to forget about the traditional ways of inhabiting or staying in places and to truly dive into a space where even the most ordinary actions bring a deep connection to the outside.

This idea is reinforced by the lighting and furniture – made of fine sheets of cast iron – which gain an appearance and materiality that somehow decontextualise them and bring them closer to nature, vanishing from the space.

Nature outside one-storey houses in hotel complex

With the aim of completely immersing the one-storey houses in nature, a meticulous landscaping project was carried out. It included the creation of a network of paths to connect the accommodations with the other buildings within the complex.

Likewise, gardening work that stayed true to the essence of the environment was done. Great emphasis was placed on the natural elements deeply rooted in local culture. This is the reason why there aren’t many ornamental plants, as priority was given to plants that were local to the area and to enhance seasonality.

Paths and trees outside Pepe Vieira hotel
Trees and plants outside the hotel
Lighting along paths and trees outside Pepe Vieira hotel

This approach sought to remain faithful to the original style, with the presence of local trees as the cohesive element among all the buildings, and light, everyday plants contributing towards blurring the boundaries. After laying down the foundations, nature will take care of developing, completing and giving them the desired look with the passage of time.

Pepe Vieira: research, tradition and local produce

Pepe Vieira

Chef Xosé Torres Cannas, who’s known as Pepe Vieira, has been at the helm of the kitchen of his restaurant for more than 20 years now. He opened it in 2001 together with his brother, sommelier Xoan Cannas, and in 2007, moved it from Sanxenxo, Pontevedra to its current location in Camiño da Serpe, Raxó, Poio, Pontevedra. In 2008, his culinary genius was recognised with one Michelin star. And this year, he left no doubt that he’s one of the top chefs on today’s culinary scene when he was awarded a second Michelin star.

Pepe Vieira’s cookery is based on ongoing research on new ways of expression using local produce. The cornerstone of his dishes is seasonal produce grown on his own vegetable gardens. He prepares his dishes using techniques from the culinary traditions of Galicia, giving traditional recipes a modern twist.

The extensive renovation of this detached single-family home, located in a neighbourhood in the city’s historic district, made it possible to turn it into a cosy and comfortable home.

Facade of restored old home
House with garden and pool
Bright and spacious living room in refurbished home

The old building consisted of a main block and an annex, which were completely refurbished. In the former, the original stone walls were recovered and the home’s layout redesigned, knocking down walls to improve the spatial and visual connection between the rooms. The floor slabs were also replaced and the roof rebuilt. With regard to the façade, its original lines have been kept intact, bringing together two openings on the ground floor to create the garage entrance.

In contrast, in the annex, conservation and maintenance work was carried out without changing the existing structure. Its façade features Iroko wood cladding finished in white lasur fitted vertically, which contributes towards visually differentiating it from the main block as well as defining the structure. The same thing has been done to the rear façade facing the garden; the master bedroom boasts a glass gallery finished in the same cladding.

After its renovation, the house has a ground floor, a first floor and a roof deck, which was used to create a multipurpose room with bathroom. The staircase connecting the different levels has remained in the same position as the original, although it has been changed to suit the new layout.

The ground floor features a garage, hall, hallway and toilet in the half nearest the main façade. The other half of the floor holds the daytime living area, which is shared by the kitchen, dining room and living room. The dining room sits at the centre of this space – right in front of the kitchen – and then the living room, which is connected to the garden through large folding glass doors.

The kitchen is laid out on one side of the daytime living area, partially separated from the rest of the rooms by an open exposed stone partition wall. A Cashmere FINE model by Santos – with its design of clean lines and smooth fronts – was chosen to kit it out, as it seamlessly blends into the home’s architecture and interior design. The kitchen also has a counter in a Natural Oak wood laminate by Santos, which is perfect for enjoying breakfast and quick meals without having to go to the dining room.

In order to make the most out of the room’s long and narrow shape, the furniture was laid out along a single wall. The centre of the composition holds the preparation, washing-up and cooking areas, and it comes with an integrated dishwasher, two hob units with plate rack accessory, and a sink unit with recycling bins in the double drawer at the bottom. Above these units are three wall units with folding doors, which come with custom interiors finished in Natural Oak wood. The one above the hob houses the built-in canopy cooker hood, while the other two have interior shelves. Beneath these two wall units, there’s an LED lighting profile with plugs, which provides indirect lighting over the worktop and makes it easy to use small appliances. This profile also comes with a slit to kit out the intermediate area of the kitchen with practical accessories such as the multipurpose jar holder, knife rack and bar with hooks, all finished in Olive Ash wood.

The kitchen furnishings are rounded out with a number of tall units located at both ends. On one end, the tall utility unit provides space to store cleaning utensils and products, while the larder units with interior drawers are perfect for storing provisions in an organised manner. On the other end, three tall units hold the built-in oven, microwave oven, fridge and freezer.

The first floor of the home was used for private areas, featuring a master suite with a dressing room, two bedrooms, a family bathroom and a laundry. Also on this floor, the building annexed to the house’s main block was used to create an open study connected to the terrace that looks out over the garden – a cosy space that serves as a retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life while gazing at the horizon.

Flat with open-plan white Santos kitchen

The athlete Ana Peleteiro and her partner, the athlete Benjamin Compaoré, decided to set up their family residence in Guadalajara with the upcoming birth of their daughter, Lúa. They chose a flat located in a quiet neighbourhood and well-connected to the city, which needed a comprehensive refurbishment to tailor it to their tastes and needs.

White Santos island with washing-up area

One of the main asks of the owners was to transform the daytime living area into a large, open area, which would foster communication and interaction among the members of the family. To do this, a partition wall separating the kitchen from the living-dining room was removed, which made it possible to create a single, roomy and bright space where the different rooms came together. The exposed concrete column, recovered from the original separating wall, brings a touch of modern, industrial chic to a room with a cosy and homey feel.

To kit out the kitchen, they chose a FINE design by Santos, where the predominance of the Silk Sapporo White finish helps to enhance the space’s brightness, while the wood notes of the Synchro Rustic Oak finish bring warmth and balance to the room.

The pièce de résistance of the kitchen is a large island that – aside from holding the preparation, cooking and washing-up areas – helps to visually separate the kitchen from the adjacent living-dining room without foregoing the open-plan concept. On its inner face, the island includes two large drawer units, a hob unit, a base storage unit, an integrated dishwasher and a sink unit with recycling bins in the bottom double drawer.

The outer face of the island features a panel extending down to the floor and an open unit with shelves finished in Synchro Rustic Oak. This was finished off by creating an original side that forms a V with the worktop. In addition, the work surface was extended towards the outer face of the island so it could serve as a counter.

Parallel to the island, there’s a row of furniture laid out along a single wall. Within a compact, organised space, it offers multiple storage and integration options, aside from a breakfast bar. One end of it was used for the cold storage area, with two tall units that integrate the fridge and freezer. The other end features a tall oven unit and a tall washer and dryer unit.

The middle of the run was used to create a breakfast bar, an open space clad with wall panels finished in Synchro Rustic Oak wood. Its furnishings include two large drawer units and two wall units with flap doors, featuring custom interiors in the same finish as the panels.

An exclusive LED lighting profile by Santos was installed beneath the wall units, which provides indirect decorative lighting over the work surface. This profile comes with plug sockets that make it easy to connect and use small appliances, as well as a slit to always keep practical accessories such as a kitchen paper roll holder within easy reach.

This is rounded off by two top box units, which expand the capacity of the furniture up to the ceiling. These optimise storage space, providing users with the option to store rarely used items that would otherwise take up valuable space in the kitchen.

This detached single-family home, located in a hillside on the Costa Brava, consists of two superimposed bodies, with the upper one slightly set back in comparison with the lower one. This difference in volumes is instrumental to two of the most characteristic features of the building: the continuous balcony on the upper floor, which runs along all its rooms, as well as the porticoed area on the ground floor, where the link between interiors and exteriors is at its greatest.

The entrance to the house is through the deck, and the areas have been distributed between both floors according to their purpose. Thus, the hall and the private areas – three bedrooms and two bathrooms – are found on the upper floor, while the lower floor is where the public areas are found, in addition to a suite and a guest toilet. The stone of the walls that outline the property provide continuity with the façade and columns of the first floor, endowing it with consequence and integrating it into the environment.

The simplicity of the exterior design extends to the interiors, where the rooms are laid out with pared-back elegance to emphasise the connection between the home and the landscape around it. Thus, large windows predominate, which enhance the home’s brightness and offer breathtaking views of the sea from any vantage point.

The furnishings and the décor feature contemporary elements, which have been carefully chosen to underscore the building’s Mediterranean feel. The colour scheme – where light colours predominate – is balanced out with warmer touches provided by wood, stone, upholstery and porcelain tiles, creating a serene, pleasant and extremely cosy atmosphere.

The public area of the home is a spacious, open area shared by the living room, dining room and kitchen. The front part of this area, as well as one of its sides, features floor-to-ceiling glazing to link it to the outside. There are no divisions or obstacles between the different rooms, facilitating movement and interaction among users.

The kitchen, kitted out with a Graphene FINE design by Santos, is laid out around a centre island with attached table, which holds the preparation and cooking areas. On its inner face, it has a hob unit and a drawer unit, both with three tiers of full-extension, large-capacity drawers. This system gives a panoramic view of their contents, facilitating access and organisation of tableware, crockery, food and large utensils. The outer face of the island, finished in Rustic Oak wood, has an open unit with shelves. The worktop – with an overhang towards this side – serves as a counter for snacks or quick meals.

The rest of the kitchen furniture is laid out parallel to the island, framed by a partition wall to minimise its impact. The middle of the composition, comprised of three base units, includes the sink unit, integrated dishwasher and a storage unit. There are four wall units with side opening door hanging above them, providing additional storage space. What’s more, the LEDs installed at the bottom provide lighting for the work surface. The row is rounded off with three tall units located at the ends, which hold the fridge, ovens and storage space.

The first has large openings to the outside, and is where the entrance, stairs and lift are found. The latter two house the daytime living area, a guest toilet and a multipurpose room on the ground floor, plus three suites on the first floor.

The kitchen has been kitted out with a Silk Black FINE design by Santos, with plain fronts without handles. The centrepiece of the room is a large centre island that holds the preparation, cooking and washing-up areas. The worktop – with an overhang towards one of the sides – serves as a counter for breakfast or quick meals. The island is packed with features on both faces: two drawer units, a hob unit, a sink unit with recycling bins and an integrated dishwasher on the inner face, plus three large drawer units on the outer face. A discreet ceiling hood takes care of fume extraction, contributing towards creating a more uncluttered look as it does away with visual barriers.

The kitchen furnishings are rounded off with a composition of tall units parallel to the island. Its fronts can be temporarily hidden away along its sides, making it easy to access and see the entire space. Its interiors, customised in an American Walnut wood finish, comes with shelves, interior drawers and an auxiliary work area with worktop that is perfect as a breakfast bar thanks to its lighting profile and plug sockets.
